Trail Update (Dec
24th 2007)
The
Gin Gin 200 trail is in place. I rattled along for
350 miles on the Skidoo Tundra this weekend. The
trail is awesome. The loop from Maclaren River Lodge,
down the Susitna River and back up the Maclaren
is absolutely awesome. The trail is hard and fast
with no overflow and only a couple of very short
icy sections---less that 50’. There is good
snow almost the entire way; the only skinny section
is from milepost 64-78 on the Denali Highway. The
highway is snow-covered, but there is a little gravel
showing here and there in this area. There are minimal
spots to hook down through this area, but there
are plenty of easily reached trees and heavy bushes.
Teams have been training though here with no issues.
The remainder of the Denali is groomed and fast
with plenty of snow cover to hook down a big team.
!4 and 16 dog teams are training on this section
as we speak.
There
are caribou in the Maclaren area, Moose from milepost
2-5 and from 65-75 mile. There are a few on the
lower Maclaren as well. Watch for porcupines in
from Maclaren Lodge to the Sue bridge.
There is a big pile of firewood for teams 58 miles
out from the Maclaren checkpoint and a warm up cabin
racers can use, 85 miles into that 110 mile loop.
This is a GPS measured distance. You are out there……I
believe this to be the longest unsupported run in
dog racing today----when you get back off the Gin
Gin you will be “Qualifed.”

This
move to Paxson was made necessary by the passing of our
friend, Galen Atwater, the owner of Meiers Lake Roadhouse.
Meiers Lake is closed indefinitely. Galen was a great
supporter of dogs and racing. Meiers was one of the original
Copper Basin 300 checkpoints, a start/finish for the Denali
Dash and the Gin Gin. He will be missed by all.
Start Information:
UPDATE: Oct 5 2007
The start of the Gin Gin 200 will be moved to Paxson Lodge,
mile 185 on the Richardson Highway. The start will become
an interval start at 2 minute intervals. The move to Paxson
will necessitate a course change; the route will run 50 miles
to Maclaren Lodge, 6 hour rest stop, a 112 mile loop back
to Maclaren, rest again for 6 hours, and return to Paxson;
42 miles. Dogs may be dropped at Maclaren both ways.

at 11:00 am. Friday, Dec. 28th. The
entry fee for the women will be $225; purse payout will
be to the top 5. Women’s
dog limit will be 12-dogs.
The
minimum for both races will be 8 to start and 7 on the
line to finish. There will be a dog drop at the Maclaren

more than 30 teams sign-up, a waiting list will be maintained.
Men’s dog limit is 10-dogs.
The minimum for both races will be 8 to start and 7 on
the line to finish. There will be a dog drop at the Maclaren
checkpoint.
Trail Description:
Start
is at Pason Lodge, the trail follows the Denali Highway
to milepost 31, then turns north into the mountains for
17 miles before rejoining the Denali at milepost 40, staying
on the highway for the final 2 miles to the Maclaren checkpoint.
The trail from the Maclaren Checkpoint travels 45 miles
down the Maclaren River to it's confluence with the Susitna
River, then North up the Susitna approximately 30 miles
to the Denali Highway crossing. Racers will turn East on
the Denali Highway at milepost 79 and travel 37 miles back
to Maclaren Lodge at milepost 42. The final leg will stay
on the highway back to the finish at Paxson.
Be prepared for wind, heavy snow and cold. Low snow conditions
with windblown sections are to be expected in some areas.
There will be some minor water-crossings. The trail will
be well-marked and maintained to the best of our ability.

HONARARY
MUSHERS |
|
This
year's GG200 race is in Memory of those who have passed
on this year. These were friends and locals who helped the
Gin Gin women's race in the past from trail breaking , handling
dogs to cooking breakfast for the mushers. They were very
much the core of our small community in Paxson. The Gin
Gin 200 race will be run in memory of Galen Atwater, Ray
and Don Hunt.
